Practicing the Presence of People: How We Learn to Love
By Mike Mason In a recent blog post, I told a story about Jerry Cook who’s one dream in life was to ‘be a man who loves well’. That phrase caught hold of my heart many years ago and it still inspires me to make that my goal. I like Mike Mason’s writing and was thrilled to read his thoughts on loving others. It’s a helpful reminder to stay attentive and ‘present’ to those around me. I’m don’t do it well, but it’s a skill worth developing. I heartily recommend this powerful book on loving well.

New Year’s Resolution Jan 1 last year: ‘I Percy, hereby resolve to no longer fly by the seat of my pants. I will plan my work and work my plan. A plan reflecting my values and my life goals. My key words for the year will be: Visualize. Strategize. Actualize.’
My plan was going quite well. Until I hit January 2nd. It all just started falling apart. Example: Here is my plan for Jan 2. As originally planned + as it actually happened. 12 - 2 PM As Planned: Administrative Tasks 12 - 2 PM As it actually occurred: 60 min to clean up 60,000 emails. Deleted all those I'll never read. Total deleted: 2. 60 min to read article: 'One hour to an empty inbox’. During which i received 93. New Year’s resolution this year: ‘I hereby resolve myself to devote my time, resources and all my energies to one single goal: 'To fly by the seat of my pants’. |
